What is bead blasting?

Bead blasting, also known as abrasive blasting or sandblasting, is a process used to clean, smooth, or shape the surface of a material by forcibly propelling small abrasive particles against it. The name “bead blasting” refers to the use of small spherical beads or pellets as the abrasive media.

The bead blasting process typically involves a specialized machine or blasting cabinet that contains a chamber where the material to be treated is placed. The machine also includes a blasting gun or nozzle connected to an air compressor. The abrasive beads, such as glass beads or ceramic beads, are loaded into the machine’s hopper.

When the machine is turned on, compressed air is used to propel the beads through the blasting gun or nozzle. The beads then strike the surface of the material with high velocity, effectively removing contaminants, oxides, paint, rust, scale, or other unwanted substances. The impact of the beads creates a sandblasted or textured effect on the material’s surface.

Bead blasting is commonly used in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, construction, and metalworking. It can be employed for different purposes, such as cleaning and preparing surfaces for painting or coating, removing corrosion, deburring sharp edges, or creating a uniform matte or satin finish on a material.
